south of conant
Built in 1951, this home was workforce housing for McDonnell Douglas, proximate to Long Beach Airport. Purchased in 2009, the house needed a complete modernization of the interior and exterior.
Location: Long Beach
Project Type: Homes
Year: 2019
Client: Rob Nickell and Val Born
the beginning
Heavy wood panelling and built-ins dominated the interiors while previous remodelling efforts (enclosing a covered carport) complicated the flow of the house. The owners had two primary goals in the remodel: increase the home’s light quality and connect all living spaces together.
The Transformation
Opening the kitchen to the living and dining rooms gave an opportunity to integrate the family room into the flow of the house. The restrained material palette allows the owner’s eclectic artwork and objects to feature prominently in the space.
