cliff may rancho

Wanting to convert a water hungry front lawn into a sunken conversation pit, this homeowner employed an architect and planting specialist to completely reconceive her landscape.

Location: Long Beach

Project Type: Homes

Year: 2014

Client: Robert and Joohae Matthes

the beginning

Located in East Long Beach, the homeowner wanted to convert her yard into a native landscape designed to entertain. Drought tolerant plantings were incredibly important. The task was to create an immersive hosting space that is environmentally responsible.

The Transformation

Poured-in-place concrete lounges and Ipe decking flank a central firepit to create a sunken entertaining space. One of the deck’s conceals an ice box where the homeowners chill beverages.
