Horton plaza
Adjacent to the thriving Gas Lamp district, we were tasked with connecting the mall to the energy of the city around it, repositioning the offer towards lifestyle and entertainment.
Location: San Diego, CA
Project Type: Hospitality
Year: 2011
Client: Westfield
the VISION
Built in 1984, Horton Plaza was a beacon within a distressed part of downtown San Diego. Its design was inward facing, providing an island of retail and comfort. Our client wanted to connect to the new energy of the city, a vibrant economy driven by tourism athletic events. Multiple devices were employed to engage with the adjacent fabric to create connections.
The PROGRAM
Strip the mall of the heavy, post-modern cladding | improve wayfinding by opening views | create new connections to the adjacent park and gas lamp district | create new entertainment and food venues to increase guest experience
